The American Work Force Weakened By Apathetic Employers, Employees
My experience with today's young people entering the mainly "service" oriented workforce, is that they are being convinced that hard work is for "Chumps", by at lot of media sources, such as Hollywood, the music industry, and the world of sports... Where their talented peers are making BIG BUCKS by doing whatever they do... The actualities of worklife as many young people see it, is a boring, brainless, thankless task to be performed for a lousy paycheck, and in so many cases these days- they are right to feel that way, I'm very sorry to say... Employers are so focused on " The Bottom Line..." and the most efficient way to make it "fatter"... Instead of developing their young employees into great workers. Managers admit they are really just seeing who they can get to do more work for less money, and no benefits, if they can get away with it... ( Bonuses or other incentives, along with threats from higher ups, can make people do anything, it seems) This downward spiral in the workforce is being fueled by an energetic dance between wrong-headed partners-- Employers who don't care and Employees who don't care- make for a harrowing vision of what the world is coming to, I'm afraid... My business is helping people to get jobs, go into business, learn to invest and so on... In an upward progression to a great Life... In the last seven years, I have noticed a sharp decline in my "Get them a job" part... And a rising increase in crimes, money based crimes such as drug dealing and stuff-- Young people are willing to "Get Rich or Die Trying" ( A popular movie had this theme and title) much more than ever-- And in Philadelphia last year murders hit the 450 mark, all victims were mainly young people, killed in "turf" wars... This scenario was repeated in a lot of American towns and cities and it's being played over again this year, too. There are a lot of forces at work here-- And they aren't all hidden or mysterious. Some of the most powerfully negative forces are right in front of us all the time-- On the media screens in our homes. Older folks like us, are NOT respected for the way we work-- Most young people that I see daily, don't see us as their role models any more... They have their own role models to imitate and emulate- From gun-toting hip-hoppers to fist-slinging Ultimate Fighting Champions, and the piles of money that they make, the cars they drive, their possies and groupies and so on... I'm not a parent, so I'm perhaps not qualified to comment on child rearing issues but it seems that an awful lot of people give "Media baby-sitting" a little bit too much power in these kid's developing years... I was absolutely shocked when I walked past a playground and overheard some (Unsupervised) kids playing a game based on a popular daytime TV show, that sometimes will have their guests take DNA tests to prove whether they are the parent of another guests baby or not... The kids were imitating the reactions perfectly-- Screaming in shock or cussing in disgust, just like the folks on TV and acting out the whold thing while laughing their heads off... A serious matter turned into entertainment. Just like the " Body Counts" on TV News... This creeped me out to no end. |
